It was such a good surprise when the captain announced that we would make a stop in Ponta Delgada, Azores, due to weather conditions. Though I did not have much time it was clear the peace we feel whenever visiting Ponta Delgada.
I did go out for a bit in the evening, after 5pm and it was very quiet. Most of the shops were closed and only the restaurants were open.
It is very pleasant to go for a walk along the marina area, appreciate the silence and see locals running.
The shops near the port are the typical ones from a modest place, nothing like the big and famous brands. Many buildings are built in the typical Portuguese colonial architecture which brings a dark look to this modest city.
I just laid down in a bench near the port, after going for a walk, and gazed at the stars because surprisingly it was warm for winter and clear skies.
In my way back I stopped in a souvenir shop to buy some cheese and something that would make me remember this day and make me smile in the future. The gentleman who served me was very friendly and I confessed to him that I was not expecting Ponta Delgada to be such a quiet place. He said to me, in his very helpful and peculiar way how island residents welcome their visitors, that the people from Azores are very shy... They would either go to the cafe to have a drink after work or would return to the warmth of their houses.
It was such a lovely time and I hope to be back soon to experience the marvelous nature that can be seen in Azores, their unique food and their welcoming environment.
